• I arrived in Sanctuary in March, roughly one month after it was founded. It was the holiday of Lilya this month. Citizens of Sanctuary participated in a “Hunt” to pay tribute to Lilya. The winners, Sylas Kingston, town doctor, and Poe, a skilled rogue, were given magical rings. Later, a horde of undead bears attacked town, so myself and others went into their den and took care of the issue. Later, a horde of regular zombies showed up, so we followed where they had been coming from. We found a strange skull with a codex inside of it, and despite the skull’s warnings, a Demon-Blooded Human named Calus took the codex, awakening something terrifying which we would be dealing with for the rest of the year.

April came along next. First, came the trial of Valentine, a Dhampir who had intentionally tried to be bitten by a lycanthrope. He was quickly put to death. Next, a local tribe of Orcs visited over a land dispute. We quickly befriended the Orcs, and they wanted to play some traditional Orcish games to celebrate. After some sporting events, we tried some Orcish snacks, and did a drinking contest. Myself and 3 others won. Later, we were attacked by a new enemy, the Flayer. It was later found out that the Flayer was actually a person named General Nalusa Flaya who turned himself into this monster. The Flayer taunted and toyed with Sanctuary before leaving. May was an eventful month. During the events of April, things got too busy to celebrate Larka’s holiday.

Dagun’s holiday was in May, but a dual event was held. In this event, Sanctuary residents chose a side, Larka or Dagun, and had to kidnap a princess from the opposite side. The first time to bring the princess back to their base won a cleanse of all curses off of one chosen individual. Team Larka won, and picked an Ice Paracellun named Glacius to be cured. He regained his memories of the Isles and lost a different curse he didn’t elaborate on. He never actually shared his memories of the Isles, so honestly, it was a waste of a cleanse. Later, the town was attacked by man-sized ants. A group of us went into the ants’ tunnels and exterminated them. After killing the ant queen, the Flayer appeared in the tunnels and chased us back to Sanctuary, where it reanimated the corpses of townsfolk to launch a large-scale attack. After leaving, Archmage Allilune of The Spires visited Sanctuary, bringing along the still-living head of the Construct Archmage Balthazar, previously thought to be long-dead. After being reactivated, we informed Balthazar of our issue involving the Flayer. Balthazar said that he knew a ritual that could first weaken and then kill the Flayer, but if he was going to teach us this ritual, he wanted the citizens of Sanctuary to promise to take him to the Isles, where he could finally be put to rest. We agreed, and entered a soul contract with him.

Over the summer, Rissif, the representative for the faction of Paralynn, tried to fight the Flayer alone, and returned to town with grievous wounds, soon entering a coma. After much debate, the owners of the two rings given in Lilya’s holiday in March agreed to put them on Rissif at the same time to see if it would help, as he is a follower of Lilya. This did work, and soon many people in the area, myself included, were put into a vision where we spoke to the spirit of a Lycan. This spirit answered one question for each of us. Through this, we discovered the existence of a new school of magic, called Sepulchre.

In August, town began the ritual to weaken the Flayer. The Flayer was aware of this, and launched another attack on town. After fending it off, the ritual was completed, and the Flayer was launched into the woods, severely weakened. Chunks of the Flayer soon grew to become Flayerlings, small nuisances that attacked us on sight. Also, a merchant of “indentured servants” arrived in town. After much controversy throughout the weekend, all forms of slavery, including indentured servitude were outlawed, and the merchant left. He was killed on the road, and the indentured servants escaped.

In September, the Flayer decided to toy with us even further, releasing four monsters around town that people had to avoid while performing a ritual involving magic crystals in order to escape the Flayer’s domain. Many people acquired a strange plague from this event, which made their faces get blue markings. This plague was lethal after a few days. Town soon set out to find a cure for this plague, and we found an elderly alchemist and his assistant who lived in the woods. The alchemist could make a cure for this plague, but he needed ingredients, which we were sent out to find. In the woods, we were attacked by the former indentured servants, who had sold their souls to the flayer. We killed them, and harvested the needed ingredients. Nothing else of note happened involving the former indentured servants. The alchemist cured our plague, and we returned to town, where we began planning out our next move against the Flayer.

October rolled around, and it was finally time to take an offense against the Flayer. We performed the final step to the ritual, causing the most dedicated of holy people in Sanctuary to be able to hurt the Flayer with conventional weaponry. During the ritual, we had to fend off undead raised by the Flayer. The next day, the Flayer was slain. The final blow was dealt by Poe, now titled the Flayer slayer. After the fall of the Flayer, the talk of the town was the ball being held in November at the home of Chipper Fellow, the representative for Daelyrun.

In November, a military standoff happened between forces from Duskwood and Krovmaer. Town deescalated the situation, but not until after there were blows exchanged. A strange midwinter market also paid a visit, but you’ll have to see it for yourself if you want to learn more. We then attended the ball, where things were going well until Chipper was found dead with the word “Unseen” written next to him in his blood. Chaos ensued, and Glacius accused Mr. Harfoot, the owner of the local bar I worked at, of killing Chipper. A mob broke out, and Harfoot fled the scene. The rest of the night consisted of dealing with the fallout of Chipper’s death. The next day, we all boarded a boat headed to the Isles to keep our promise to Balthazar. Over the winter, being on the boat was rough. After a stop in Jarren’s outpost, where we got to see Mr. and Mrs. Harfoot living a new life, we fully set out for the Isles. We lost a few members of town during the trip, including Vannluk, a Construct known for being skilled at cooking, and a certain Ice Paracellun. We also received news of Daelyrun falling, and factions competing to take the land. On top of this, Gargrin, an Orc Lycanthrope, has made life even harder on full moons, due to losing control and transforming into a Werewolf. Keeping everyone safe, including members of Duskwood like myself, has been a hassle. Hopefully we will make another stop soon.

  • Let me tell you the story of this journey so far. I traveled to this new town called “Sanctuary” in the late summer months, taking a while to get there by foot. When I first arrived in this town without one single Faction’s grip on it, I was intrigued.

A good amount of the town became very busy with a so-called “council meeting” and were very busy for hours. I got introduced to some of the younger members through them asking to spar for a while while many of the adults were busy, which seemed to make them happy.

The captain of the Guard, Bramble, was a great boon to me helping me to understand the written rules of sanctuary, as the tribal law I was used to would not suffice here it would seem. How strange that so much paperwork had to happen when someone wronged another, instead of exile.

I remember thinking, as the tribe I came from would offer someone exile for a season in which one of the elements would judge them. They could be forgiven once for each of the four, but must undergo an exile through the season in which they might be forgiven, in stark contrast with their courts, their fees, their jail, their executions.

I had professed interest in being a guard before fully understanding this, as I thought it was more to be a warrior at the ready in case of hostile wild life, or raiders, as compared to mostly policing the crimes from within the settlement.

I began hearing tales of the Flayer. This... Primeval Hunter that couldn't be harmed by any known means. This being able to charm and twist others to its whims, that stalked the forest at night looking for more victims and fodder, that could affect someone by just looking at them. I wished it was a dark fairy tale to stop their children from wandering into the woods at night... Dear Gods, I was in for a hefty surprise. We were visited one night by this very gruesome creature’s ilk, swarming the town wave after wave, every perverse form of life rapping on the Inn’s doors, undead, malformed wildlife, Citizens half changed being forced against their will to try for the Sage’s head we were defending... It was so, so much. That night was what got me Torrix’s approval to join Krovmaer.

Things seem to happen in Sanctuary fast. With no particular order to these, we are laying spirits to rest and the faithful we’re earning blessings to be able to combat the Flayer. Town got to see a paragon crafter create something of epic qualities, people are gambling exorbitant amounts at night, which gave me the idea to hustle some cash via arm wrestling which mostly paid for my mythril weave boots, I heard the aftermath of Heathcliff's bugs devouring someone close to Calus, saw Alberich get a dragonweave shield, deal with some nightmare landscape and made it through though, despite the blue disease curse thing happened... I would rather not remember that experience. Then, the night we went after the Flayer.

It was epic, watching the faithful beat it down but me and Jackquiline were very busy stitching people back together when they fell in the fight. That night Poe The Flayer Slayer got the glory of that kill, he carries it well.

A moon later we played dodge rock with the local orc tribe to defend our town while we went on a voyage to the isles. It was fun, but grueling. We routed the last of the flayerlings, and stopped a budding war from happening between Duskwood and Krovmaer. An Assassin tried to make matters worse, but I chased him down when he tried to run and cast spells to escape, I pummeled him to death breaking each of his incants. When dragging his corpse back, well... Duran decided the corpse deserved to be mutilated for what he just did, which I cannot blame him for.

The hat man showed up and some people seemed to be willing to sell their souls for power. At first I was.. But as I stood there I got a feeling something wasn't right so I found a way to finesse myself into a better position without giving up anything really... We had a wonderful ball to go to and my compatriot Foss came through in the nick of time with a dress that would fit and be appropriate for meeting the lord of the land... though, it didn't last long until he was assassinated and plunged Daeylrun into chaos and thus everything else that became chaotic.

We have been on this ship now for almost 3 moons. I dislike not being on solid earth, but perhaps this may be for the best that we aren't getting caught up in a land war and ripping the bonds apart that hold Sanctuary together. Things were quiet at first, but then we had one death and an MIA happen... and in all of that I got off to a rocky start with Dovin. I still feel bad for how I initially treated him as if he was already a criminal. It opened my eyes to how my position can easily be corrupted.

  • Report on Sanctuary

First I must humbly apologize as church & faction work took me away from Sanctuary at one point so I was not present for the entirety of the first year, but this report represents all info I have gathered either as a witness or from others explanation of the events during my absence, Sincerely: Corelas

During the first 2 months of settlement Sanctuary had successfully formed a counsel and written at the time its first set of laws. During these first few months they also faced several difficulties including revisions to their laws, the first public court hearing and execution. As well as the forming and dissolving of several Guilds. In this time the first few business also opened and started to grow. The settlement also established its bounty board and started to handle the local issues and proper settlement of the unsettled area which lead to many unexpected problems and discoveries.

Of these Issues many were small in nature. This includes the discovery of an ancient crystal cave that leaked magical energy that was turning local animals into undead. Two different cults being discovered and handled one of which were creating demon blooded babies. The discovery of a small tribe of goblins using sovereign magic to control animals and raid nearby settlements, which seem to have agitated a group of Unicorns as-well. We also had a large nest of giant ants that formed near Sanctuary and a group of trolls we have managed to make allies with. But the largest event was the discovery of the Dungeon and Cypher.

In the dungeon we faced many things including undead and stone knights. The two most notable events were the reveal of one of the settlers being a werewolf who has to this date shown great care with his curse and the finding of the cypher at the end of the dungeon. This cypher once solved revealed what felt like either a prophecy or a guide of what to do next in our quest as well as held a stone, but at the time we didn’t know it had also released and awakened a Nasula flayer. This creature hounded us for months till through great effort and help from arch-magus Balthazar and the blessing of the Gods it was slain.

With the amount of small events and unexpected events surrounding Sanctuary has me curious. I’m unsure if the Flayer’s existence underground had influenced the surrounding area, or if this is simply a the case of an unsettled area being left to its own devices for to long. Regardless of which the settlement despite all of this has managed to persist and grow with new residents showing every month.

I apologize as there was many more things I could include as this year has been eventful, but I am currently writing this report to be sent out this night by Harpy before we set out by ship for what we believe is the second gem. I hope this letter finds each of the leader I sent it to in good health. I hope once we return to write and more detailed report with the trip to the isles included.

To all that this reaches, my regards : Corelas.

  • I am Duran Bourdain I have recently joined the ranks of Sanctuary and the barracks of Krovmaer I am a direct follower of T’yrak and I view my craft as poems so I have decided to present it as such

We fought the Flayer tore him down

    Immortal coil unraveled crown

    Villagers lost in battle’s sweep

But hope still flickers not too deep

    We praised T mischief’s guide

Our homes revealed no more to hide

    Jarren’s Outpost stood the test

    Zarkov's crime brought no rest

Giants slain the woods still mourn

But in our hearts new strength is born

    September

Monsters and masked men shadowed and grim

Followed the Flayer at every limb

They nullified powers left us in pain

Yet still we fought through loss and strain

The Crystal slipped from my weary hand

The Flayer's prize his cursed demand

Blue plague swept we staggered and bent

Weak and frail by sickness sent

Zarkov stood trial his guilt was clear

Sent to the woods his end was near

To slave for the giants till trees would rise

And claim his soul beneath dark skies

    We worshiped T'yrak crafting's lord

Through his grace I earned the sword

Templar of my god now I stand

    With his power unfairness banned

    October

    October came with whispered dread
As steel was drawn and blessings spread
With Nedo’s grace we stood as one
Beneath the dim and dying sun

Blades rang out the heavens cried
As priests and warriors fought with pride
Spells took flight and swords struck true
Until the Flayer’s reign was through

The beast lay still the cheers rose high
Poe stood tall beneath the night
We drank we laughed the fire’s light
All stayed warm with no throat dry

The salted breeze the ocean’s song
A ship would take us far here long

    December

    December came with festive cheer
A noble’s ball was drawing near
    Chipper Fella full of grace
Welcomed all to his grand place

Yet before the night could shine
Steel was drawn in a tense design
    Duskwood clashed with Krovmaer’s pride
I stood between letting peace decide

The feast resumed the wine poured free
But fate had darker plans to see
Chipper fell his blood ran red
The Unseen in the grass was spread

    Harfoot named yet truth unsure
Thought was him with the blood still pure
Yet laughter swelled the party stayed
As if the night was unbetrayed

By morning’s light with tides untamed
We sailed ahead yet none the same

  •   Poe's accounts of our time spent in Sanctuary

February: 1st holiday in Sanctuary, the holiday of Rikia. Rikia’s holiday was celebrated with a contest of theft, each member of town competed to obtain and hold onto the box of Rikia. Notable events of the Holiday include Duskwood holding onto the box for the majority of the month, till the box was taken, allegedly by Da’at killing Gregori. This “murder” resulted in Duskwood ganging up on Da’at and trying to force her to admit to the killing, I didn't take kindly to the jumping, so I interviewed and Knocked out Gregori. The matter was solved when Gregori challenged Da’at to a game of cards. Da’at won..At the end of the Holiday it was revealed Nerium had won the Rikia box game. Other events include the founding of the council, with representation from each faction and the factionless. The introduction and challenge of the Orc tribe,we were ambushed on our way back to town after dealing with some local threats by a orc tribe nearly doubling ( or more ) the size of our town, when we approached them they told us that we had a few months to prepare, that they'd be back to challenge us for all that we had. Finally, a large gate appearing outside of Sanctuary with undead “pouring” out of it, near what we could only assume as Steve's house.

March: 2nd holiday in Sanctuary, the Holiday of Lilya. The town competed in a game of hunt, the issue being we weren't the only things hunting. There was a Lycan loose in the woods, as we hunted to find and obtain the two rings of Lilya, the Lycan hunted us. The Two rings were obtained by members of Duskwood, till one was sold to me. Notable events related to the holiday include Duskwood hiring me to hunt the Lycan. Planning to save and help the Lycan I had captured the Lycan and left it in a severely weakened state, unfortunately a younger member of Duskwood had intervened and killed the Lycan while in my custody.

Other events included the members of our town exploring the gateway that appeared out of town in hopes to solve the undead problem, we encountered many obstacles including puzzles, undead, rats, traps, and a skeleton band that charmed all but me, and Xavier into dancing. As our town rested we all soon discovered that the well known orc Gargren, was also a Lycan. He transformed and attacked our party as we rested. With the help of town we all managed to take him down and end his rampage, however, a new problems arose as a member of Duskwood named Valentine took a bite out of Gargren nearly turning himself into an abomination. At the end of the dungeon we came across

Two boys, playing around a very large tree, the situation was not as it appeared however, the boys and tree appeared to be semi-translucent, spirits, or memories, I am not sure.  As the boys ran around the tree, it appeared as if one of the children had stolen a gem very important to the other, hiding it among the roots of the tree before using their own stone to simply walk through the tree themselves.  The boy who remained desperately searched for the gem, stating things to the nature of 'Where in the realm is it' and 'I need to go home.'  our party ultimately found the gem, and upon returning it to the ghostly child, The child simply vanished, walking into the tree that it supposed sibling had also walked into. Then the tree disappearer as well. After fighting off another wave of undead coming from a statue with a thorn crown,  a mental voice called out to everyone present, offering us a word of warning that went ignored. The warning was something along the lines of  "Leave this sanctum untouched You are not the hero,

There are no heroes on this path of tragedy." Appearing in front of us there was a skull, similar to a Lycan, but larger, with a codex in its mouth. Members of Duskwood quickly grabbed the codex, before the skull, along with the undead, and ultimately the entire complex disappeared. Leaving us to wonder what would come of the mental threat as we walked back to town.

April: 3rd holiday in Sanctuary, the holiday of Larka. Unlike the prior month the holiday went unchallenged by an event for the God Larka, while many of us were concerned by this we had other things on our mind, first being the trial of Valentine.

For the crimes against Duskwood, and nearly getting us killed, Valentine was sentenced to death.

Second being a vision, or maybe a transportation into somethings mind of us lost in dark woods before a voice echos out of seemingly everywhere. Saying something along the lines of “what's going on, who touched the skull, what is that thing, it has something in its mouth.”

Finally we were faced with the challenge of the Orc clan, we faced contest such as, “goblin Ball”( a game of catch and poisoned daggers ),”dark ale drinking contest” ( a game of drinking till the last man was left standing ) and archery.

With all contests finished, our town managed to keep ourselves together, however at night fall we were attacked by a creature we couldn't kill, or even injure. Eventually it grew bored of tormenting us and left leaving most of town confused and scared. With the month ending with a vision of us all traveling to the isles with a strange head on our ship to guide the way, and Bramble posting that a contest would be held between Larka and Dagün in the following month.

May- 4th holiday in Sanctuary, the Holiday of Dagün. In celebration the town was split in half, each half set to protect their own “princess” while trying to capture the other. I was hired to work on the side of Larka. Though the contest was close the side of Larka won. With our victory, we were given the prize of a cure to anything, including curses. Our team decided to give the cure to Glacius, who was a large part of why we won. When he was cured his memory of the isles returned, and his cursed sword was destroyed. At night town went to deal with a giant ant problem, I'm not a fan of big bugs so I hid in the woods, evidently when the town went to deal with the ants they ran into the creature from the prior month ( now known as the Flyer) I only know this because when I returned to town I found nearly everyone dead or freaking out. When things had calmed down and everyone was healed, Allalune from the spires walked in with the construct head from our vision. ( who we soon learned was Balthazar) when reactivated we spoke to Balthazar about the Flayer and how we couldn't deal with it on our own. Hearing our plea he offered to help us destroy the Flyer, in exchange for us helping him with being laid to rest for the final time.

The summer months of sanctuary- These months were filled with hard times, the Flayer was rampaging along the countryside and there seemed to be no end to it. Our town sent warnings to as many as we could, offering safe haven in Sanctuary for anyone who could make the journey as we had plans to prevent the Flayer from entering our town in August. But it still didn't stop the Flyer. Seeking a way to slow the Flayer down Rissif hunted and fought the Flyer. He was able to hurt the Flayer just enough that it stopped it's rampage and fled into hiding but it left him in a near death state.

Fearing for his life the healers of our town worked around the clock for days to keep him stable as the rest of us searched for a solution. Eventually we turned to the divine, discovering Rissif was a follower of Lilya we came up with two solutions, 1. We find the champion of Lilya or other followers of Lilya for guidance. ( Failed ) 2. We use the rings of Lilya to try and heal Rissif. Although it was my idea, I wasn't quite ready to part with a magic item from the gods, in exchange for a chance at healing a man that my only interaction with was him threatening to turn me into a frog for his entertainment.

Eventually I was convinced to part with the ring by Da’at offering to one day help me replace it.

When both rings were placed on Rissif, we were all transported to the Realm of Lilya, where we met with the champion of Lilya, a now wooden Lycan. We were all permitted one question, the only important one being “what can we do about the Flyer”. The response was

"Find the Pirate, seek Nedo's aid, do a little dance.”

August-5th holiday in Sanctuary, the holiday of T. The holiday of T was celebrated with a game of “faction warfare” but much to the gods nature there was a twist, participants had to team up with those born in the same faction as each other, not the faction you were currently in. Being on the team of Jaren's Outpost, we claimed Victory and were given the chance to go through the book of T, a risk that had many rewards.

Outside of the Holiday, we had a strange “Trader” come to town, hearing we had no laws on indentured servitude, he sought to take advantage and to turn a profit, this brought controversy to our town as the council argued amongst themselves on the laws. ( this would lead to the council finally being put to rest, and the laws changing in our town )

Finally Balthazar was ready after months of preparing, a ritual was held to set up a barrier to both weakened and prevent the Flyer from entering our town. Our job was to protect Balthazar as he channeled magic for the barrier. We were assaulted by waves of undead and charmed people ruthlessly, but eventually the ritual was completed. As the barrier went up, the Flayer was stripped of his  beast form, leaving him far more humanoid and weakened. He threatened us then fled.

September- 6th holiday in Sanctuary, the holiday of Ty’rak. Ty’rak’s holiday was celebrated by a contest of deals, one by one, our town had to make deals with each other till a victor was decided. Outside of the Holiday our town was assaulted by Flyerlings covered in a blue disease. Any who fell during this assault were infected with the infection. Lucky enough, not many were infected thanks to the work of Bramble the guard captain. Unfortunately the blue disease had quickly begun spreading across our town however. Thanks to the help of two local herbologist, we were able to develop a cure for the disease however.( In doing so we also cured and convinced a local sailors captain to help us on the voyage we’d soon go on ) Also, The now escaped indentured servants, who had killed the “trader” who possessed their contract. Having teamed up with the Flayer and decided to attack our town, we slowly worked our way through each of them, unfortunately killing them all as there was no chance for reason at this time. When we made it to the end, we caught the Flayer turning the child servant into a Flayerling. After battling and defeating the creature it returned to its original form, before quickly being consumed by Heathcliff, who split himself in half to do so.

At the end of the month we had ghost soldiers approach our town saying “Nedo, will offer his ade”

October-7th holiday in Sanctuary, the holiday of Nedo. With the promise of Nedo’s help, our town traveled to find help to deal with the Flyer, battling through the abominations the Flyer had put in our way we eventually made it to the site Nedo had deemed necessary. Gathering all the holy the rest of the town guarded us as we all prayed to our gods for help. Although the ritual was painful and tuff, eventually, those of us who prayed, were blessed with the ability to fight the Flyer.

With that in mind we all prepared for the eventual battle.

The night of the final battle, we all fought our way to the Flyer. With the none holy leading the charge so that we could hold our strength, we'd eventually make it to a clearing where the flyer waited for us. While the none holy of us weren't able to approach, myself and the other would assault the Flyer in waves. The Flyer battled hard, killing most of us easily and tossing us to the side, we fiercely battled to keep the Flyer weakened and to resurrect our fallen. Eventually, through the combined effort of the holy, the Flyer and I faced off, battling for the last time my daggers finally hit their mark. The Flyer was defeated, we rained victorious, and I found a new calling in Rikia.

November-8th holiday in Sanctuary, the holiday of Patyna.

With the Flyer finally defeated and the year nearly at its end, our town was invited to Chipper’fella’s estate for a ball. But before that we had to pay our taxes and deal with the midwinter market coming to town. The hat man ( operator of the market ) offered us all, many deals. Each member of town competed for these items by bidding everything from, gems, to their ability to use magic, and even parts of their soul. I personally obtains the ability to pursue priesthood by sacrificing a portion of my soul. While the ball was lively and excitement was high, things took a turn for the worst when I returned from the bathroom to find that the ball was in a panic, it seemed someone had killed Chipper’fella, and wrote “The Unseen” in his blood. In the chaos many people spread blame, causing even our local barkeeper to flee town in fear of those who assaulted his friend Chipper.

With the months end at hand, we all packed up and boarded the ship for the aisles to uphold or promise to Balthazar.

The winter at sea- Traveling to the isles,

At first things were uneventful, many grew restless causing much bickering but nothing abnormal at first. Unfortunately things wouldn't stay this way, a crate with half frozen remains was discovered with a note saying something along the lines of “a bargain made, a bargain kept.” Then those who were near reported hearing the hat man laughing. While there was initial confusion on who the remains could be It was later decided that it was most likely my now former guild mate Glacius. Struck with grief, neither myself nor any other of On the Vine would be ready when our towns local construct, and Guild member of mine, had slipped, nearly falling overboard the very next day. Vannluk luckily was caught on a rope. But just when we thought we could pull him up, a giant tentacle reached up and grabbed him, pulling him under. Since then much has been a Haze for me, but now as we approach the Isles I gain a sense that I must commence a ritual of my own in the name of Rikia.
